Yabba Dabba Doo Man-Chops + Easy Tomato Chutney

Remember the opening intro to the Flintstones where they get drive-thru giant brontosaurus ribs that almost tip the car over. I so would have tackled this back in the stone ages and would love giant fries to match. Well my recent encounter with the "Man-Chop" reminded me of this very scene.

Friends of the family have moved down to Mossvale, NSW where they discovered their local butcher farm livestock and slaughter by demand. As you can imagine the meat is ultra fresh and I have yet to taste anything better. I personally have not been to this butcher and would love to go visit sometime, but for now I'm content with friends/family stocking up my meat esky after every visit :) The latest shipment brought back the above mentioned Man-Chop. Fresh hunk of beef, I think around the rib area with each chop weighing over 500 grams.

Shankette's vegie garden has also flourished this season, particularly with tomatoes. She has 3 plants, cherry tomatoes, grape and kumato which are yielding a whole bucket full every 2nd day. With such abundance, we couldn't let them go to waste so she found Jamie Oliver's "Easy Tomato Chutney" recipe to compliment our Man-Chops. Jamie's recipe was by far the easiest, hence the name I guess. There was no need to blanch the tomatoes, you could use a variety of tomatoes and the ingredients list and method was, well, easy.

Easy Tomato Chutney
(Adapted from Jamie Oliver - Magazine)

Ingredients:
  • 250 grams red onion, finely diced
  • 500 grams mixed tomatoes, roughly chopped
  • 1 red chilli, de-seeded and sliced
  • 75ml red wine vinegar
  • 140 grams brown sugar
Method:
  • Put everything in a pan
  • Season to taste and stir well to combine
  • Simmer for 30-40mins until a jammy consistency is formed
Hint:
  • If you sterilize your container the chutney will last in the fridge for up to 4 weeks.

And what was the verdict of my Man-Chop with Easy Tomato Chutney you ask....Yabba Dabba Doooo!!

Till next time ... we eat!!

  8. Can't believe you're harvesting a bucketful of tomatoes every day! All the insects, caterpillars and moths must be camping out at our place! :D
Would have loved to have a hand in the chop pics for a size comparison. I just can't imagine a half kilo chop!

  9. Hi Suze. Meat esky good...road trip!!

    Hi Joey. Thanks :)

    Hi Wag. Dino-licious too!!

Hi Lorraine. I love the Flintstones and how they used dinosaurs as a everyday household appliance :)

    Hi Thang. Big and delicious!!

Hi Helen. Yeh Yeh Man Chop Good :)

Hi Jen. We must of been lucky with the tomato as we're not green thumbs. Better luck next season.

Hi Yaya. Next get together. Yaya get man-chop *beats chest*

Hi Lobo. Put up a shot just for you. It's about the size of half of a standard pizza (which is the size of the plate it's on). And the left shot is the weigh in after cooking (this excluded the weight of the plate too)

Hi GB. My answer to insects and caterpillars are Marigolds - worked a treat this season (also pyrethrin spray). Sadly no hand shot but above is the man-chop on a pizza-sized plate.

  10. That tomato chutney was so good, you should bottle it...oh you did! Lucious bottle all finished now, makes me so happy to know the major ingredient was all home grown! Onions and chilis in the garden next?
